Wild Horses at Aus

Lüderitz

Situated 120 kilometres east of Lüderitz is the Garub waterhole which attracts a herd of wild horses. An observation stand has been set up to allow visitors to watch these interesting and beautiful animals. The herd of horses were originally part of the South African cavalry stationed in Namibia, and ran away when they were frightened by shots from a German aeroplane in World War I. The animals have since adapted to the desert conditions and are the only feral herd of horses to survive in the desert.
